The default encoding of the httpd server and the template is iso-8859-1, therefore that the non-Western characters are unable to be displayed. Sad

We have changed this so that new users will have a charset of utf-8. To alter your own, enter the back office, click on Templates and change

Code:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />

to

Code:
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />

Or simply reselect the theme of your choice in the back office.

If you have further problems, please let us know

That means I'm going to have to convert my database content, which won't be a bit issue as I only wrote in English. If I were a non-English user, I would have to go and manually edit all the special characters in my posts to change the db content, as I don't have direct access. Make sense?

Yes, but actually they were already posted and stored in utf-8, despite the templates saying iso-8859-1. The change to utf-8 in the templates *should* be sufficient though i am keeping my eyes open for problems...

Well, it should be sufficient if my thinking is right. Which i think it is. Which i think is unsurprising Smile

I'll run a small test on that Smile

What I thought.

View http://bunny.blogsome.com/2004/11/30/un-test-dencodage/ in a browser like FireFox. Looks right, doesn't it?

Now choose View > Character Encoding, and note (at least that's how it is for me) that there is a checkmark next to Western ISO-8859-1.

This seems to show that the server is serving ISO-8859-1, despite what is specified in the meta header.

Just for fun, force FireFox to read the page as UTF-8 by selecting UTF-8 from that menu: the accents in my French post get all jumbled.

For an example of REAL UTF-8, try http://climbtothestars.org/.

Probably the server is set to serve ISO-8859-1 by default. Try reading what I went through when I dived into encoding hell some months ago, I think it has the solution:

http://climbtothestars.org/archives/2004/07/18/converting-mysql-database-contents-to-utf-8/

What is pulled out of the database right now on Blogsome is ISO-8859-1 as far as I can tell.

Thanks - i was unaware of an apache directive doing that - dammit! Database all converted now and everything should be shiny and happy. Thanks for the link - made switching it over the work of a moment Smile

You're welcome -- that's why I wrote all the isntructions down (as it took me a few days to figure out, I assumed it might save other people's time)
